London, JC Gallery, James Ward presents: American Modernism, 2023Arthur Dove has been credited as one of the first abstract painters in America.
This period for Dove was the end of a tumultuous time and his return to his first house, a former post office, after living with Helen Torr on a houseboat for eight years.
After purchasing a new home, Dove was diagnosed with pneumonia and suffered a heart attack. This drastically restricted his lifestyle. For the remainder of his life, he lived a quiet, peaceful existence, finally dedicating himself to painting away from farming duties. These were some of the most powerful paintings of Dove's career, many of which are now housed in the Museum of Modern Art and the Philips Collection.
