JC Gallery, London, Arthur Dove: extraction, not abstraction, 2024This intimate work, crafted in 1942, features semi-transparent cerulean blue, sap green, and impasto cadmium yellows layered over burnt umber. The vibrant blue, unusual for Dove, may reflect an optimistic mood or the heat of the summer season. Created while Dove was living in the countryside, this piece embodies a new direction, far removed from New York's skyscrapers.
Dove's adoration for nature shines through in this work. Thick yet delicately placed flecks of blue and yellow sparkle on the surface, rendered with small brushstrokes. This polka-dot-like technique, reminiscent of Impressionist mark making, is playful and expressive, highlighting Dove's sense of wonder towards the natural world.
Thick yellow abstract strokes break through three radiating brush marks of purple-brown muddy tones, illuminating the scene. Beneath these bright hues, muted yellow ochres and vivid sap greens peek through, adding depth and vibrancy to the composition.
