With a hugely distinctive collection of work spanning oil paintings, watercolours and etchings, Hopper established himself as one of the greatest and most prominent American painters.
Born in Nyack, New York, Hopper studied at the New York School of Art in 1900 and became a student under the influence of Robert Henri. During this time, Hopper began to develop his style of voyeurism within traditional American scenes depicting an insight into the private lives of others. Indeed, his wife Josephine (a talented painter in her own right) appears in many of Hopper’s most celebrated works. Josephine contributed much to his career, both as a supportive wife, a model and creative partner.
Hopper’s scenes consistently invite the viewer to use their imagination on the story - a true temptation to speculation and wonder. Hopper is recognised globally as one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century - enforced by his continual praise, retrospectives and positions within some of the most important institutions worldwide.
