JC Gallery, London, Arthur Dove: extraction, not abstraction, 2024Dove was an active member of the New York contemporary art scene. However, by the time this study was created, his lifestyle had become more reclusive and he enjoyed spending time in nature in scenic Centerport, New York, where he and his wife had returned. During this period, he lived in close proximity to the natural world, farming and fishing on the land.
This exciting work is defined by its rich browns. While the left of the image is dominated by colour fields of burnt umber, the right gives way to a dark yellow ochre. A collection of outlined shapes—squares, ovals, and triangles—sometimes playfully intersect, resting above these browns. The shapes, painted in browns, turquoises, and greens, appear to change color when overlapped. Dove was fascinated by geometry, which is perhaps evident within this intimate yet confident study.
Vigorous brushstrokes create energetic vibrations that add dynamism to the work and convey the speed with which Dove created these studies. Dove worked quickly, often producing many small watercolors in a day. However, he did not consider them studies but finished works in their own right.
