European vs American Modernism
In the early 20th century, many American artists undertook transformative journeys to Europe, immersing themselves in the vibrant art scenes of Paris and Berlin. During these expansive trips, they forged significant connections with European artists. These exchanges led to intellectual and philosophical expansion, influencing their artistic techniques and sparking a European influence that shaped the course of American art.
This exhibition presents works from both Europe and the United States. Building on our celebration of American Modernism, delving into connections with the continental movements of Expressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism, fostering a dialogue surrounding the collision of artistic circles and individuals.
Timeless ceramics and lithographs by Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró are showcased alongside charming watercolours and inks from American modernists such as Joseph Stella, Abraham Walkowitz and Thomas Hart Benton. Highlighting and honouring the profound impact of these artistic relationships, this exhibition offers a glimpse into the collaborations that emerged between these two distinct groups of artists.
