In this charming regionalist lithograph, Benton captures a classic Midwestern American scene: two men talking, drinking, and smoking together in a bar. Titled 'Discussion', the artwork invites viewers to speculate about the topic and motivation behind the men's dialogue. The man on the left, adorned with an impressive hat and trimmed collar, stares confidently at his companion across the table, who sports a cap and a more casual style. In the background, two other men appear vacant, each isolated in their own worlds.

Benton's lithograph technique uses tight cross-hatching, which creates a sense of movement, animating the scene. His ability to bring figures to life were skills he developed during his time working as a cartoonist for the Joplin American newspaper in Joplin, Missouri. His use of contrast is also remarkable, employing Rembrandt lighting to cast a triangle of light on the cheek of the more debonair man, drawing our eye to his, which sits below the shadow of his fashionable hat.

A fine impression with large full margins published by Associated American Artists.
