This intimate abstract work, depicting towering buildings emerging from the smog filled city, is one of many drawings the artist did of New York City in the early 20th century. A dense powerful image is dominated by strong lines that make up skyscrapers. Between 1905 and 1910, the city’s skyline was redefined by the rise of iconic structures which shaped its modern architectural landscape. Walkowitz applies harsh pressure and dramatic use of pencil on paper to capture the fast paced energy of a city undergoing change and industrialisation.
