JC Gallery, London, Arthur Dove: extraction, not abstraction, 2024
Intrigued by eclipses, Dove likely encountered photographs of the iconic 1919 eclipse, pivotal in validating Einstein's theory of relativity. As Alan Pensler explores in 'A Reassessment,' this event became enmeshed in Dove's deeply personal Christological iconography.

Dove orchestrated watercolor and ink in a ballet of hue, line, and shape, akin to an orchestral conductor imbuing music with emotional resonance. His art aimed not just to be seen but to be felt, to forge a visceral connection with the viewer.

In his work, celestial bodies of verdant green hover amidst a canvas awash with golden yellows, russet, and fiery orange. These orbs, encircled by rings reminiscent of planetary orbits, evoke the ethereal dance of eclipses. Dove, profoundly influenced by nature, sought to encapsulate its essence and dynamism through techniques inspired by the bold color planes and vigorous brushwork of Cubism and Fauvism.
